Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

Im just sharing a super quick smoothie recipe today. This has been my favourite chocolate peanut butter smoothie lately. I used to have this with some plant based protein powder but since I have been pregnant I have tried to avoid protein powder a little more than before. I remember reading an article saying that its not the best for the baby and although I cant remember what on earth the article said and I think it was referring to the very low quality ones with loads of additives I have decided to minimise protein powder in my diet just in case. Im actually glad I did because I think I like this powder free version even better.

The reality is I wanted a recipe to show case my new stainless steel straws. I am a big fan of smoothies and fresh juices for all the added health benefits but as a dental hygienist I am constantly confronted with people that struggle with acid erosion on their teeth. This is when the enamel becomes thin due to the amount of acid the teeth are directly exposed to. The teeth become more translucent looking and weak, which means they are more susceptible to wear from grinding/clenching and are also a lot more sensitive than they should be. The majority of the time the cause is acid reflux or strong acidic drinks like soft drinks but even healthy fruit juices can be highly acidic for the teeth. Commercial juices often add extra citric acid to their juices as a preservative which makes the acidity levels even worse! Citrus is the worst for it, and although citrus fruits are very healthy for us and loaded with vitamin c and other good things, they can still be too strong for the teeth. This is why we recommend using straws! using a straw bypasses your teeth ( provided you don’t then swish the liquid around in your mouth) minimising the amount of acid your teeth are exposed to. I also love that these straws are stainless steel, not plastic. I’m not one to know much about environmental problems but apparently plastic straws are bad for marine life, so I love having reusable straws that create less waste and don’t harm any animals.

This particular smoothie is not very acidic at all so you could just drink it normally without any threat to the teeth but I think its a great habit to get into, plus straws are more fun! If you are wanting to get your hands on some of these straws you can find them at my favourite eco shop. I am popping the link down below 🙂

Buy stainless steel straws.

Absolutely delicious! Perfect sweetness. I froze my banana to make it creamier.
